With the recent snow on January 12th, Devil’s Lake State Park will now be loaning out snowshoes whenever the Nature Center is open!
So what’s it like out there right now? Well, here is a bit of video we captured on top of the East Bluff on January 13th, 2020.
As of this morning, (Jan 14th, 2020) there is about 3 inches of fresh snow on the bluffs with more snow expected throughout the week. Ideally, we like to see about 4-6 inches on the ground to protect the snowshoes from damage, so we’re right on that edge.
Nature Center Hours
Here are the current Nature Center Hours. Keep in mind, however, that due to staffing issues, the NC is closed whenever the naturalist is out doing other tasks.
Saturdays – 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Wednesdays – noon – 4 p.m.
Thursdays – noon – 4 p.m.
Fridays – noon – 4 p.m.
Hiking Conditions
As of January 13th, the trails are mostly snow-covered and can be slippery. In some areas, thick ice built up in low spots and has created some slick areas, now hidden below the snow. This is especially true on stairways including the stairs down to Devil’s Doorway, and sections of the Steinke basin Loop & Tumbled Rocks Trail.
