Spring Snow! Wish You Were Here!

Devil’s Lake State Park has been transformed into a winter wonderland, with 3-5 inches of fresh snow from this week’s snowstorm.

While it may seem unusual, Wisconsin is no stranger to significant April snowstorms. In fact, many of us remember the storm on April 18th, 2018, which brought around 7-8 inches of snow to our area. However, that pales in comparison to the April 9-10, 1973 storm, which is one of the National Weather Service’s “10 Worst Snowstorms in Wisconsin History.” That legendary storm dumped over 13 inches of snow and brought winds of up to 50mph, creating a truly unforgettable experience for those who lived through it.

Weekend Weather Forecast and Trail Conditions

As we head into the weekend, expect the snow to melt quickly with temperatures rising to the 40s and 50s on Saturday and Sunday. However, hiking trails will likely be a mix of snow-covered, wet, and muddy conditions. Stone staircases will be slick! If you plan to hike in the park this weekend, please exercise extra caution.

Despite the unexpected snowfall, this weekend will be a great opportunity to get outside to explore nature. Just remember to prepare for the changing trail conditions as the weather warms up.
