Elroy Sparta Trail

There are many touring and rail-to-trail cycling adventures to be found in the Baraboo Hills and beyond. Select an option below and you’re on your way!

Road Biking

Devil’s Lake State Park – While cyclists are always asking about a circular road route around the lake, we don’t usually recommend it. Cyclists certainly can ride around the lake by combining, County DL, Highway 113, and South Shore Road into a hilly and serpentine circuit. Yet, even if you have the stamina for the elevation changes, the traffic can be downright crazy around Devil’s Lake State Park. Curvy roads and blind corners increase the risks. In addition, the roads right around the park often have little or no shoulder to ride on. So while it is possible to do a road loop, it’s not always enjoyable.

City of Baraboo – Families often want to ride their bikes from Devil’s Lake State Park into Baraboo. While this is possible, Baraboo has few bike lanes and traffic can be an issue.

Touring – The Baraboo Hills (Actually many areas in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region.) can be pretty strenuous for the casual rider with elevations varying up to 400 feet or so and changing regularly. At the same time, Sauk County is a popular touring destination with amazing rural scenery and lots of great stops.

Bike Trails

Sauk County is a gateway to fantastic rail-to-trail adventures. You can jump on the 400 state trail in Reedsburg, which connects to the Elroy-Sparta Trail and north. You can now get on the ever growing “Great Sauk Trail” in Sauk-Prairie and ride from the city through the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area. Eventually the Great Sauk Trail will enter Devil’s Lake State Park. Mirror Lake State Park offers about 9 miles of fairly easy wooded, grassy surfaced bike trails.

Mountain Biking

When it comes to mountain biking, you’ve got a few options from Devil’s Lake State Park’s Uplands Trail, to Devil’s Head Resort’s Mountain Bike Trails.
