Let’s Look Ahead to Mother’s Day Weekend in Baraboo, Wisconsin
It’s only the beginning of May, but the race to summer is already in full swing here in the Baraboo Hills.
At Devil’s Lake State Park, all the campgrounds are now open, and the North Shore concessions are up and running on weekends. Parking is already tight on Saturdays and Sundays—including at popular SNAs like Parfrey’s Glen and Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area, where the first fall of the season has already occurred. (As always, please stay behind the fences—they’re there for safety and conservation.)
It’s that time of year when we “put our summer on.” Things are picking up fast, and the pace will only accelerate from here.

This weekend is expected to be a busy one in and around the park.

According to the US National Weather Service – Milwaukee/Sullivan, we’re in for a warm and sunny stretch:
Saturday – Sunny, with highs near 77°F
Sunday – Even warmer, around 81°F
Trail Conditions
If you’re planning to go hiking in our area, you’re in luck, most area trails are in good shape.
While we had some rain about a week ago, the ground has dried up nicely. That said, you’ll still find muddy patches in Steinke Basin and along the Uplands Trail at Devil’s Lake. Trails at Mirror Lake State Park and Rocky Arbor are looking good across the board.
Weekend Events Around Baraboo
Spring Fair on the Square
Location: Downtown Baraboo
Date & Time: Saturday, May 10 | 9 AM – 4 PM
Over 220 artists and crafters, live music, food trucks, kids’ activities, and open-air dining on the courthouse lawn.
Celebrating Mothers at Cave of the Mounds
Location: Blue Mounds, WI
Date & Time: Sunday, May 11 | 4 – 5:30 PM
A quiet and cozy Mother’s Day celebration, with pastries, herbal tea, and a guided cave tour inside this National Natural Landmark.
Know Your Nature – Devil’s Lake State Park
Location: North Shore Visitor Center
Date & Time: Saturday, May 10 | 1 – 3 PM
Take a 3-mile roundtrip hike with the park naturalist on the East Bluff Woods Trail, exploring spring ecology and the forest landscape. This hike is moderately difficult and can be muddy, best for adults and kids 10 and up. Meet at the North Shore Visitor Center.
Cold Water Caution
Yes, the sunshine is calling, but Devil’s Lake water temperatures are still pretty cold. Falling in could trigger cold shock or hypothermia, even on a warm day. As a longtime kayak coach, I still recommend dry suits this time of year and strongly advise against wearing cotton.
