Goldeneye duck on Devil's Lake

While smaller lakes in the area are frozen, Devil’s Lake is still open. Looking at weather forecasts, it probably will remain that way for some time. So, what are you seeing out there on the water? You are most apt to see Canadian geese. There’s a lot out there! But if you look a bit more closely you’ll find a variety of ducks as well. Mostly you’ll see Common Goldeneyes (Pictured above) and Red-breasted Mergansers. You may see Buffleheads or Greater Scaup as well.

Why haven’t they migrated? Well, many birds, ducks, and even Sandhill Cranes won’t migrate unless they have to. They will head south once the water freezes and food no longer becomes available. Until then, there are still many bird-watching opportunities on Devil’s Lake.
