A Winter Morning in Sauk County

Snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing… Whatever you’re into there’s a lot to keep you busy during the winter here in the Devil’s Lake region. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Downhill Skiing

There are two large ski resorts in the Baraboo Hills, Devil’s Head Resort near Devil’s Lake State Park, and Cascade Mountain along the interstate highway near Portage, WI.

Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

Mirror Lake State Park has built a reputation for amazingly well-maintained cross-county ski trails, while Devil’s Lake State Park is the better option for snowshoeing. Click here for Devil’s Lake Snowshoeing info!

Many state natural areas make fantastic snowshoeing locations as well. You can learn more about our nearby natural areas right here.

Snowmobiling

You’re best resource for snowmobiling information in our area is the Sauk County Snowmobile Association. For trail maps and other information visit their website here. For trail conditions, follow them on Facebook.

Ice Fishing

Both Devil’s Lake & Mirror Lake are popular ice fishing locations, but there are more options from Lake Wisconsin to White Mound Lake. Your best resource for Sauk County ice fishing information, conditions and updates is from Lake-Link’s Wisconsin Fishing Reports. Neither Devil’s Lake State Park nor Mirror Lake State Park report on ice conditions.

Ice Skating

While Devil’s Lake State Park does not maintain a skating rink in the winter, the nearby city of Baraboo has 2 skating rinks which are typically open by late December. The heated Pierce Park Pavillion (1 mile south of Devil’s Lake.) is open from October through April for indoor ice skating and hockey.

Sledding

In addition to the sledding hill at Devil’s Lake State Park, the city of Baraboo maintains a sledding hill at Steinhorst park. Learn more here.
