Birdwatching Update: What’s Arriving This Week at Devil’s Lake
Wildlife Wednesday – Spring Migration in Full Swing
It’s been a lively week in the trees and skies of Devil’s Lake State Park as spring migration continues. If you’ve been out on the trails or just listening from your campsite, you’ve probably noticed a few familiar voices returning. Here’s what’s been spotted lately:
Baltimore orioles
rose-breasted grosbeaks
blue-gray gnatcatchers
yellow warblers
white-throated sparrows
white-crowned sparrows
barn swallows
tree swallows
palm warblers
ruby-crowned kinglets
ospreys
…and a flying brown trout. 😆

Whether you’re birdwatching along the Steinke Basin Trail, enjoying the shoreline, or just relaxing near your site, now’s a great time to slow down and take it all in. Some of these birds are just passing through on their way farther north, while others will stay to nest throughout the summer.

Spring is one of the best times of year to explore Devil’s Lake’s birdlife. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just curious about what’s singing in the trees, there’s always something to discover.

For nearly 2 decades the Skillet Creek blog has focused on 3 main goals; To inspire you to visit and explore the Devil’s Lake region, to help you get the most your visit by sharing tips, events, and other helpful information. Lastly to advocate for our environment & wildlife and talk about how we can keep our natural areas amazing now and into the future! That last goal can sometimes cause controversy, but it’s the only way we can accomplish the first two. – Derrick Mayoleth, Owner.
