Winter snow, east bluff, Devil's Lake State Park, 2024.

Expect snowy trail conditions In The Devil’s Lake State Park area this weekend! We are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 1 pm Friday. More snow and rain are expected on Sunday.

How much snow is coming? The forecast varies depending on where you look. Generally, we’re looking at 4 to 9 inches with the highest amounts being on top of the bluffs. While the trails have been snow-free for a while now, it’s spring in Wisconsin, so we knew this was coming, right?

Be Smart!

You know the drill. After a big snow, stairways will be slippery. Drops, holes, and cliff edges are often hidden by the snow as well. If you’re going to hike, keep these common-sense rules in mind:

– Check the forecast for changes before you leave.

– Let someone know your hiking plans and expected return time before setting out.

– Dress in wicking layers and backpack extra clothing to stay warm and dry.

– Pack essential supplies like water, snacks, a first-aid kit, light, and a means of communication in case of emergencies.

– Carry a walking stick and wear cleats for better traction and stability. (Use the walking stick to search deep snow for footholds) Be sure of your footing before putting weight on each step.

– Know where you are and bring a map along with GPS or an app such as AllTrails, as it’s surprisingly easy to get turned around and off-trail in snow.

– If conditions seem too dangerous, or you just feel “off”, be prepared to turn back and live to hike another day! 😉

Just use caution and be safe out there!
