How do you relax after the holidays? We’ll around here relaxation includes working off some of those gingerbread calories on the trails of Devil’s Lake State Park! The recent snowfalls have created a perfect winter wonderland out on Steinke Basin and on the bluffs surrounding Devil’s Lake. It’s a perfect time to strap on those skies or snowshoes and go explore the wonder’s of nature!
Skiing & Snowshoeing
Right now at Devil’s Lake the cross-country ski trails have not been groomed as of yet, but there are some nice tracks out there. (Remember, hikers and snowshoers should stay off the ski trails) Snowshoers have created some nice paths up and down the East Bluff as well as other areas throughout the park. It’s worth mentioning that if you are going up onto the bluffs this time of year, be careful. The trails, and especially the stairs, are hard to navigate any time of year, and are down right scary when covered in 8 inches of snow. The stairs present a whole new challenge in snowshoes!
If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, you’re invited to join our park’s naturalist on Jan 1, 2014 at 3:30 pm for the First Day Hike out on Roznos Meadow. The two-mile hike is fairly easy and family friendly. Dress warm and bring a flashlight and your snowshoes. There will be free snowshoes available to borrow if you don’t have your own. If you’d like to borrow snowshoes at another time you may do so at the park’s nature center. Beginning Jan 2, 2014, the Nature Center will be open during the off-season Thursday and Friday from noon to 3:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Park Stickers
Don’t forget, you’ll need a new 2014 State Park Sticker after Jan 1st. The new 2014 vehicle admissions stickers are now available for sale at the north shore Visitor Center daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
