West Bluff Evening Panorama at Devil's Lake State Park
West Bluff Evening Panorama

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult

Why Hike It? If you can only hike one trail in the park it should either be the East Bluff Trail or West Bluff Trail. Great views from atop 500 cliffs on either route. The West Bluff Trail offers amazing views beyond the East Bluff to Lake Wisconsin in the distance.

Description: Devil’s Lake State Park’s West Bluff Trail is a difficult to medium effort trail that is surfaced with rough blacktop. Hikers on the north end are greeted by a long staircase to the top climbing more than 400 feet in elevation. From the south shore, the trail is more winding, but also includes long sections of stone stairs. Once on the top, the West Bluff Trail travels levels out somewhat and takes hikers through the woods, past steep drop-offs with many scenic views of the lake and park. (1.5 miles, approximate hiking time 1.5 hours) It can be combined with the Tumbled Rocks Trail along the lakeshore to make a 3-mile circuit.

Winter: Generally ice-covered and slippery. The staircase on the north end of the trail, cliffs and steep drops can be especially hazardous in the winter.
