Waiting for the Merrimac Ferry to pass.

Canoeing or Kayaking on Lake Wisconsin near Merrimac can be a fun experience although you will have powerboats and jet skis to contend with.

Lake Wisconsin offers many little bays that paddlers can explore and often has a wide array of wildlife from beavers to pelicans to watch, especially in Gallus Slough. Wind on the open lake can also generate some bigger waves which can be a blessing or a curse depending on your skill level.

We recommend staying near the shoreline and only crossing the lake at the railroad bridge where there is only a narrow channel that powerboats may use.

Trip Idea

Our suggested paddle trip on the north side of the lake, takes you into a shallow (Gallus) slough, then out along the shoreline east to the Merrimac Free Ferry crossing. It’s always fun to watch the ferry from the water. There is a small park with a spot to tuck in, if you’d like to walk over to the ice cream shop! From there you’ll continue on to a small park where you can enjoy a picnic lunch, before returning back to your car.
