Fall Colors Devil's Lake State Park

Colors are changing surprisingly fast here in the Baraboo hills and at Devil’s Lake State Park this week. Our good “weather window” will be Friday and Saturday… [Weather Forecast] So if this is your weekend, come and visit us! The colors are better than expected and will continue to improve into next week.

Overview

As we’ve said each week, the colors right now are still best in sunny areas around roads and parking lots. This is where you’re most apt to see reds and deep orange colors. So if you are driving on Baraboo’s city streets or in Devil’s Lake State Park’s north shore day-use area, you’ll see lots of colors. As you head into the forests on the hiking trails, you’ll see more yellows and greens. East Bluff Woods Trail is finally more yellow than green and the park entrance road is leaning toward yellow now as well.

Landscapes & Drives

If you’re planning on seeing the colors on a scenic drive this weekend, you won’t be let down here in the Baraboo Hills. The bluffs as seen from a distance are much more colorful than just a few days ago. We’d recommend taking our Baraboo Hills Scenic Drive right now, being sure to hit “Devil’s Delight Road”. When it comes to all of Sauk County, it becomes less colorful as you head north and west of Baraboo and out of the hills.

Now or Never?

If I had to guess, the best colors are going to hit early next week with the best color on the Devil’s Lake State Park entrance road coming late in the week. So next weekend might be nice as well. BUT, the weather forecast is unsettled. Rain and wind may be pulling down leaves nearly as fast as they are changing. So, if I only had one weekend, I wouldn’t wait. I’d take this sunny Saturday now. It will be a colorful weekend. Then if next weekend remains good, and if you can, come again!

Devil’s Lake State Park Halloween Hike

Another reason to come Saturday is for the park’s annual torchlit Halloween Hike. We’ve got more info on that event here.
