North Shore Parking Lot

Is there color out there? Yes! Are the fall colors going to peak this weekend? Well no. When will it be peak? Well, you see, it’s looking like one of those weird years…

If forced to call a “peak” weekend, I’d say we’re a week out yet. Thing is, it feels like a muted season here in the Baraboo Hills. For the next couple of weeks, we will have some nice fall colors for sure. With that said though, there are Lots of areas that are still green and others have already burned out and dropped their leaves. It’s an odd season in our part of the state. So here’s what things are like now.

Devil’s Lake State Park

At Devil’s Lake State Park there are some nice colors here and there. As I’ve said the last couple of weeks, the north shore around the parking lots are colorful. Throughout the park, you’ll find colorful trees or clusters of color, but you’ll also find a lot of green. Park “fall color” favorites such as the entrance road and East Bluff Woods trails are still more green than anything.

Around The Baraboo Hills

The story is the same. There are colorful areas and there are areas that are past peak. It’s all a matter of where you look, but you won’t see those amazing candy-colored landscapes that we see in some years.

Ultimately there are some beautiful colors out there to enjoy and the best time to visit is anytime you can! I expect colors will improve somewhat over the next week or so but all in all, we should temper expectations this season. Nature as we know, always has its own plans. :)
