Flowers on Roznos Meadow

You still have time to get out and see the oceans of flowers blooming on local prairies. While some, such as the purple coneflowers & wild bergamot are nearly done for the year, others such as black-eyed Susans and compass flowers are filling the prairies with color.

Where To Look?

Right now inside the borders of Devil’s Lake State Park, we recommend heading over to Roznos Meadow. You’ll be surrounded by flowers from the moment you hit the parking lot. Be sure to hike the trail as well. For most folks, this is a 2-mile (1 mile each way) out-and-back hike unless you want to head up the bluff!

Another great option is just across the road in the Merrimac Preserve. Right now the best areas are on the east side along Marsh Road. From Roznos Meadow, Take County Rd DL east toward Parfrey’s Glen, turn south on Marsh Road for about 1 mile and begin to see the blooming prairies on both sides of the road. If you keep an eye out, you’ll see a variety of small parking areas and various trailheads including access to the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

Be Aware!

So now that we’ve invited you to check out the prairies, we need to share the downsides. First, it’s going to be hot this weekend, and prairies are extra hot and usually dry. It’s best to explore a prairie early or late in the day. That said, use sunscreen, wear a hat and take enough water for your visit. You’ll also want bug spray. Prairies are home to vast numbers and varieties of insects. Some, such as biting flies and ticks are not all that fun to meet. So spray up!
