Balanced Rock Trail - Winter

The forecast for Saturday is looking pretty sweet with some sun and temps near 50 in the Devil’s Lake State Park region. However, the popular bluff trails are snow covered, icy, and will be hazardous in many areas.

A Look at the Balanced Rock Trail, Friday, Feb 26th. 2021.

The trails that will be most hazardous this weekend will include;

Balanced Rock Trail
East Bluff Trail
West Bluff Trail
CCC Trail
Potholes Trail
Tumbled Rocks Trail

These trails are notorious for becoming very slick as the snow melts during the day and turns to ice overnight. If you’re one of the folks who will hike these trails anyway, we recommend wearing ice cleats. Keeping in mind that cleats work well on the snow and ice, but can actually be more slippery when you are walking on bare quartzite staircases.

If you’re looking to avoid icy staircases this weekend, we recommend the following trails…

East Bluff Woods Trail
Grottos Trail
Steinke Basin
Roznos Meadow

Have fun out there this weekend! And be safe!

  1. Do you know when the herons return to their South Shore rookery? I notice some nest building – mostly owls.
