Shagbark Hickory

It seems like every popular event has been canceled lately. Well, that’s not true really. Only the “human” events have been canceled, nature just plugs along. And really, the arrival of spring is a pretty popular event too. Here at Devil’s Lake State Park, spring is coming on as usual despite that little blast of cool temps we had this weekend. Here’s some of what you can expect to see out on the trails this week…

Rescue Road 7
The forests are quickly greening up out there!
Ferns
You can see ferns rising from the ground to fill wet areas of the forest floor.
Duchman's Breeches
Dutchman’s Breeches have been out for a while now, and will soon be gone.
Jack-in-the-pulpit
Jack-in-the-pulpit are just coming up. This one was a quick starter.
Birdfoot violet
This is NOT Wisconsin’s State Flower. This is a birdfoot violet. Our state flower is the wood more common violet. You’ll see both at Devil’s Lake right now.
False Rue Anemone
Tiny False Rue Anemone are all of the forest floor atop the bluffs.
May Apple
May Apples are getting tall. Although not common, they can get up to 18″ tall!
Oak Leaves
Young oak tree leaves bring color to the forest.
Shooting Stars
And coming soon to the top of the east bluff, an ocean of Shooting Stars!
