Suddenly it’s winter out there! The trails are covered in a few inches of snow. The popular bluff trails are snowcovered and slippery in spots. Be extra careful on stone steps and along rocky cliff edges. The flatter outlying trails such as Steinke Basin are also snow-covered, but also have some half-frozen mud and puddles here and there. Sadly, there’s not enough snow for snowshoes yet!!!

The Video

Today’s video (above) is a walk up the park’s East Bluff Trail past Elephant Cave and up to the first overlook. It gives you a good look at the trail too. If you want to watch it on your big screen, just head over to our YouTube channel where we are slowly building up a collection of longer hike and drive videos around the park and in the area.

Trail Reports

Winter Hiking With Cleats
We recommend ice cleats this time of year on bluff trails.

Remember we post trail reports year around. How detailed they depend on where I’ve been in the park recently and most importantly on reports from folks like you who are out on the trails as well. You can help us and fellow hikers by reporting your experiences!!

Hunting Season is Coming

We’ll talk about it more next week, but here’s a bit of advance warning that Deer Gun hunting will begin in our area on November 23rd and YES, hunting is allowed within the park and will affect many hiking trails. Again, we’ll post details as we get closer to opening day.

Stay Warm!

Where ever you play this weekend, stay warm and be safe out there!

  1. Thanks for the info! Can you recommend a good trail this weekend for a family with kids ages 4 and 18 months? Sounds like those upper trails might be too slippery?
    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Jennifer. Thank You! This coming weekend, I’d expect the upper bluff trails are going to remain slippery, but the East and West Bluff Trails are the only locations where you get the nice overlooks. If you like to hike this time of year, I’d recommend getting some ice cleats. We recommend something like IceTrekker Dimond grips. To stay off of the hills, you may want to hike the paved trails along with the north and south shore beach areas. The grottos trail on South Shore would be nice. Tumbled Rocks is fairly flat but can be slippery as well. You can find full trail descriptions at https://www.devilslakewisconsin.com/activities/hiking/devils-lake-trail-details-descriptions/.

Another option is Mirror Lake State Park about 10 minutes away. The Echo rock trail is pretty nice too. 😉
