Fold in Baraboo Quartzite

This small folded layer of rock near Devil’s Lake State Park’s north shore entrance is one of 3 standout points of interest where Baraboo Hills geology is concerned. The other 2 being Van Hise Rock in Rock Springs & Point of Rocks just west of the park.

Folds are created when a flat plane of rock under pressure from both ends, bends instead of breaks. The fold at Devil’s Lake is made up of layers of Baraboo Quartzite (The purple rock) between layers of phyllite.

The fold is a popular stop for various geology field trips around the Baraboo Hills each year. For the exact location contact the Devil’s Lake State Park naturalist.
