The Friday Wrap (Feb 2, 2018)

The Friday Wrap (Feb 2, 2018)

Happy Ground Hog Day!  Yeah, the local groundhog saw his shadow… AND he didn’t bite anyone. So 6 0f 1 there… The big story around the park this week is the ice. It’s slippery out there!  Looks like we may have up to 3 inches of snow coming in beginning on Saturday morning so the roads could get sketchy as well.  Oh well, that’s winter right??

The Lake

The folks over at Lake-Link.com are reporting around 14 inches of ice on the lake. Makes sense, while we did have a day of warm weather this week, mostly it’s just been bitter out there.

The Trails

Just to reiterate, it’s icy.  While you might think the flat trails in the park would be better, a quick bit of melting during the week caused water to pool and refreeze.  Put some snow on it, and it’s going to be harsh.  Use caution on the trails.  Better yet, buy some cleats!

The Events

The park naturalist has a family-friendly Winter Walk going on on Saturday 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm. You’ll discover all sorts of cool, fascinating things that are happening outside in winter! Warm up at the end of your walk at the campfire with a hearty cinnamon-spiced, fire baked apple treat!

Mirror Lake State Park’s Candlelight Hike, Ski, Snowshoe event is Saturday night from 6pm-8pm.  Join the Friends of Mirror Lake State Park for a fun-filled winter evening. They will have 2 easy, 1-mile torch-lit trails for your family to explore. One trail for skiers (IF there’s any snow to ski on!) and the other for everyone to enjoy. The Friends group will have refreshments to enjoy around roaring bonfires.  For more information Call the Mirror Lake State Park office at 608-254-2333 or visit the friendsofmirrorlake.org.

The plan is that Devil’s Lake State Park will hold it’s Candlelight Hike/Snowshoe next Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018… depending on conditions!

New Rangers!

As of Jan 1, Devil’s Lake State Park got 4 new park rangers. WELCOME!!!  So, you may or may not know about all the changes going on within Wisconsin’s park system but one change is that DNR wardens now handle law enforcement and the rangers will handle the sort of duties you tend to think about when you think about “Park Rangers”.  🙂 To my understanding, they will be handling; Visitor services, interpretation, park maintenance and that sort of thing. They will be more the “kids run up and hug” sort of rangers than the “teenagers hiding in the woods” sort of rangers!  Again, welcome to the park!!

Changing Rates & Event Content

I’m sure you’ve heard about the coming jump in camping and daily pass rates at Devil’s Lake and a couple other “Tier 1” parks. (“Tier 1” in DNR parlance just means “busy parks.”) That said, all the rates on the website are current as of today but may change soon. I’ve been telling everyone, get in your camping reservations now.

The other change on our website is that I’ve split our events content into two sections; Park Events & Area Events. This will make it easier to see what’s going on around the park as well.

The Big Discussion

So some folks think higher rates at Devil’s Lake will keep people away.  I don’t agree and wrote about that here.  If you’d like to join the discussion, please comment on the blog or better yet, join the discussion on Facebook. We’d love to hear your thoughts!!

I think that’s it for the moment.  Have a great weekend. Stay safe! Really. We like it when you go home with GOOD stories to tell!
