Yeah, you could stay home and clear out the junk drawer this weekend. You KNOW it needs to get done! Yeah, the weather is going to be cold for the next couple of days and it looks like we could get an inch or two of snow, but really, who want’s to clean? The thing about a junk drawer is that you don’t actually want to get rid of the stuff in there, you just don’t know where else to put it! So forget it. That’s my advice anyway!
At The Park
At Devil’s Lake State Park it should be a quiet weekend. There is another 4 day deer gun hunt starting today and running through the weekend. So hikers should take all the precautions and are advised to stay out of hunting areas. I’ve posted more details here. It’s also worth noting that if we do get an inch or two of snow tonight, the bluff trails will be slippery and hazardous, so be careful hiking the trails along the cliffs.
If your looking to get your kids outdoors, the park naturalist has set up a “Letterbox Adventure” for Saturday. Letterboxing combines elements of hiking and treasure hunting into an activity that the whole family can enjoy. Participants seek out hidden letterboxes by following clues and recording their discovery in their personal journal stamping the rubber stamp that’s found in letterbox. Indoor Holiday Events
If you want to stay inside, there are a couple of holiday options for you as well. One thing you could do is go explore the Verry Merry Holiday Fair with over sixty artisans, authors, and purveyors of good things to eat. this is the 10th year this holiday show has been going on at the Baraboo Arts Banquet and Convention Center. (We go for the cheese!) Oh, and here’s a bit of trivia; The historic arts center used to be a factory called Industrial Coils. My grandmother worked there for years, soldiering little wires under a magnifying glass. 🙂
The Verry Merry Holiday Fair runs Today (Friday) Dec 8 from noon to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. Click here for a map.
Today and tomorrow is also the Edwardian Christmas festival at the Van Orden Mansion here in Baraboo. During this event, the mansion will be decorated with 11 trees themed to the 1942 move, “Holiday Inn.” There is also be a room dedicated to the 1954 classic holiday film, “White Christmas”.
The “adult” premier with wine and appetizers will be tonight at 7 pm. Tickets for the premiere are $22 for non-members and $20 for members.Tickets are limited, so I’m not sure if you can still get in on this one. However, Saturday is the main “family” event which will include live music throughout the day, holiday treats and horse-drawn rides from 2 pm until dark. Tickets for this event can be purchased at the door and will be $5 for members, $7 for non-members and children ages 12 and younger are admitted free. For more information, call 608-356-1001 or visit saukcountyhistory.org.
Skiing & Snowshoeing
Right now in Baraboo, we’re waiting on the snow. Of course, the ski resorts including Devil’s Head Resort, just minutes from Devil’s Lake State Park, have been making snow on the slopes and they’re rockin’ already. Devil’s Head is reporting a variable base up to 28″ and they will be opening today (Friday, Dec 8th) at 4 pm for the weekend. For those of us into snowshoeing & cross country skiing, we’re waiting. We may get an inch or two tonight! Once we get some snow, we’ll talk more about the free snowshoes at the park and some snowshoeing tours I’ll be offering through Devil’s Lake Adventure Hikes as well. Come on Winter!
Have a great weekend everyone. Stay warm, and be safe!
