Thanks to volunteers from the Ice Age Trail Alliance, the American Alpine Club and Wisconsin Climbers Association, a particularly sketchy section of Balanced Rock trail has a fancy new reroute.
Last weekend during the Craggin Classic rock climbing event, volunteers braved the wet weather to carry gravel and asphalt up the nearly vertical trail to rebuild and re-route the trouble spot. This area, known as the “Balanced Rock Wall”, has been notorious for traffic jams between climbers and hikers during the busy summer season and for all intents-and-purposes, most of the original trail had long ago crumbled away. The new re-route should create some breathing room.
Walk the new section!
Thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who worked on this project. As Doug Hemken, vice president of the Friends of Devil’s Lake State Park Board of Directors, told the Baraboo News Republic, “These days, this kind of work doesn’t get done without groups like the Ice Age Trail Alliance and volunteers.”
