Weekend Events. The Quiet Before The Fall.

Weekend Events. The Quiet Before The Fall.

October is welcomed in quietly here in the Baraboo Hills with not a lot going on this weekend. That all changes a week later when the calendar explodes with fun fall events for the rest of the month. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, however, back to our one quiet weekend…

Events

There are two events to check out at Devil’s Lake State Park this weekend. First, there is Universe In the Park on Saturday night from 9-10pm. Join astronomers from the UW-Madison Astronomy Program for an evening of exploring the universe at the Northern Lights Amphitheater! (If there is rain, the presentation will be moved to the Nature Center.) There is an information presentation and a telescope set up as well. (If the weather allows!)

On Sunday families (especially with young kids) might want to head over to the Nature Center for “Nature Art” from 11 am to 1 pm. A leaf, a spider web, or even a ladybug can be an inspiration for an art project that your children can create and take home.

Update:  I don’t want to forget to tell you that this weekend is BADGER TRAILS WEEKEND! That’ means swarms of scouts everywhere in the park.  It is defiantly NOT a quiet fall weekend on the trails or in the camgrounds!

If you’re looking for more to do around the Baraboo area this weekend, you might want to check out the “Spirit Walk” or haunted walking tours in Downtown Baraboo put on by Baraboo Tours.  We’ve taken the haunted tour ourselves and it was a good time. 🙂

Fall Colors

I wrote more about the current color situation in a recent blog here. I’ll be posting reports each week though autumn. Suffice to say, this isn’t a peak weekend. We have a long way to go, but there are a few nice colors here and there. Still, we may not have peak colors, but the gathering vultures are worth checking out. I hear vulture watching and cocktails is a good autumn combination!

Playing In The Water

I’ve received a lot of questions about boat rentals and swimming at Devil’s lake this week. Well, the lake is still pretty warm and people are boating and swimming. It really all comes down to the weather. The forecast is calling for a nice weekend. Sunny and 60 on Saturday. A few more clouds on Sunday, breezy, but still nice with temps in the lower 70s. Local Weather forecasters are calling for a warm up next week. Boat rentals are generally available this time of year at the north shore concessions when we have good weather.

That’s A Wrap!

So that’s the weekend. Of course, there is more. There are orchards & farm markets to visit and fun scenic drives to be had. There are new hiking trails & natural areas to discover and a zoo to check out. You could visit cranes or tour Aldo Leopold’s Shack and Farm. You could learn to rock climb or paddle the boo, Ride the 400 Bike Trail or hike the Ice Age National Scenic Trail or just sit by the river and have a meal and drink… or two… Whatever you do, have fun, be safe…  We’ll talk again soon.

Oh, I guess there’s a lot to do this weekend… it’s not so quiet after all!
