Enjoy Wisconsin State Parks, natural areas, and trails free this weekend! It’s “Free Fun Weekend” here in Wisconsin meaning that vehicle admission fees to state parks are waived June 3-4! You may also fish for free Saturday and Sunday as well.
At Devil’s Lake State Park, the big event of the weekend is the “Explore The Night Sky” program on Sat, June 3, from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Join the Madison Astronomy Society (MAS) to learn about the night sky. MAS will have several telescopes set up and show you cool features about the moon, point you towards some winter constellations. This is more of an informal program where you can come anytime and the MAS volunteers will help you get to know the night sky. Meet near the north shore boat launch parking lot, just behind the Rock Elm Shelter. There is also a half-day “Hike Back in Time” with retired naturalist Ken Lange and Saturday is Animal Feeding Day.. always popular with the kids. Check the events calendar for times and details.
Find A Trail!
There is a new offering at the Devil’s Lake Nature Center called “Find A Trail”. If you’re wondering what trail to hike or what to see in the park, join the Nature Center staff every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning (Memorial Day through Labor Day) for some great ideas.
Meanwhile at Mirror Lake State Park
The Friends of Mirror Lake State Park are hosting the KEN LONNGQUIST DUO Saturday, June 3rd 7 pm to 8:30 pm The Friends of Mirror Lake State Park and the Staff of the Park invite you to enjoy the Ken Lonngquist Duo on the Amphitheater stage this Saturday. They will perform a blend of Folk music that spans over 35 years all across Wisconsin and the Midwest. Ken has been named 3 times the Gold Award Winner for “Best of Madison” and also Madison`s Favorite singer, Songwriter, and Performer by the Isthmus news organization. This is a free event but donations are appreciated. A 2017 Wisconsin State Park sticker in needed to enter the Park and can be purchased at the office.
Sunday’s big event is held at Baraboo’s Oschner’s Park. Jun 4, 2017. 10am-4pm (Just a couple miles from Devil’s Lake) Zoo Crew is an Annual fundraiser for Baraboo’s Ochsner Park and Zoo featuring food and refreshments Children’s games and activities, live music, arts/crafts fair and more! All You Can Eat Pizza Hut Pizza is $8! Come out and support our local zoo with a fun-filled day of food and activities. The good list of events is posted by the Baraboo News.
This weekend is Canal Days in Portage, Wisconsin which is just about 15 minutes from Devil’s Lake. Enjoy this celebration in downtown Historic Portage. Historic tours, parade, music, food, craft/vendor fair throughout the downtown and free canoe rides on the canal. Events begin today and run all weekend. You can find the schedule of events here.

Of course, there are many scheduled events in the area from the Farmers Market Saturday in Downtown Baraboo to ghost tours. Oh, and of course there’s a lawn that needs to be mowed! Whatever you do for the weekend, the weather is looking agreeable with temps in the 80s and slight chances of thunderstorms as you would expect. All in all though, Good times!
