Let’s Be Careful Out There!

The parking lots, especially on Devil’s Lake State Park’s south shore are down-right scary this morning! Be careful if you’re planning a visit over the next couple of days!

After the crazy weather and the sudden warm up, the roads and parking lots around the Baraboo hills run the gamut from good condition to terrifying depending on the location.  As I pointed out yesterday on our Facebook Page, the Steinke Basin parking area was plowed, but little more than an ice rink. The main north shore parking area is lumpy, but fair condition.  You want to keep your speed down regardless. South shore is a another matter…

CCC Parking Lot

CCC Parking Lot is a skating rink!

On the park’s south shore, South Shore Road this morning is in poor, but drivable condition; Lumpy, but sanded. The parking lots are dicey. This morning I drove into the main parking area and to test a theory, locked the brakes in a corner on my all-wheel drive Outback at 5 mph. No kidding, just 5 mph! My car still slid sideways at a syrupy, slow motion pace until it hit the snow bank! The CCC parking area is the same or maybe worse. I would not want to be in that parking lot with other cars.  To test this lot I started at a full stop, I locked my wheels to the right, then accelerated slowly. My car moved straight ahead! Yikes! Until these lots are sanded, you can’t expect your car to stop or estimate stopping distances.

Conditions will change, as things warm up. The fog in the park will lift and the sun will come out as the day goes on. The ice will continue to melt. So just watch conditions, and drive cautiously in the park for now. And speaking of ice melting…
