The big question this week has been, “Are the lake flies gone?” Well, the answer is a definite, “probably.” Here’s why; The lake fly invasion only lasts about 2 weeks so their evil reign should have ended sometime this week. However, it’s been cold, windy and rainy the last few days which keeps the flies on the ground, so it’s hard to tell for sure. What I can say is that I’ve walked the beaches the last few days without a seeing a single lake fly in flight and there are large piles of dead flies along south shore road. So good signs anyway!
We also want to give credit to the hundreds of birds that have been out dawn to dusk, as they are every year, clearing out the lake flies as quickly as they can. Sometimes nature provides the most efficient maintenance crews in the park!
