Free The Wee Snakes!

Yesterday the baby garter snakes born at the Devil’s Lake State Park nature center were big enough to be released back into the wild. There were 20 babies total. 18 were released and 2 will be staying at the Nature Center where you can stop in and watch them grow.

Garter snakes are one of the most common snakes in North America and you can find them anywhere from Canada to Florida.  Adult garter snakes are usually around 30 inches long, but can grow up to 5 ft in length, but not to worry, these guys are not venomous and only eat small fish, frogs and worms.

By the way, garter snakes get their silly name because someone thought that their stripes reminded them of the garters men used to wear to hold their socks up! But don’t try holding up your socks with garter snakes!!

Here are a few more photos of the babies being set free…

It took a moment, but once they found their way out, they took off!

baby snakes are hard to see on the forest floor.

This little one stopped to stay goodbye before heading off into the rocks..
