Yes, Parfrey’s Glen is Open!

Sometimes it can be hard to get the word out and we’re still being asked, so let me say it again, yes Parfrey’s Glen is open!  In fact, now is a great time to visit the wildly popular, Wisconsin state natural area.  We’re still a couple of weeks away from Memorial weekend so there are still opportunities for a fairly quiet hike through the glen, especially weekdays and early mornings. What’s more, being early May, the greens are neon and the stream is alive with sounds that echo off the steep stone walls.  Of course, Parfrey’s Glen is magnificent year around, but right this moment, it’s something special.

WI Fishing Season Opener Saturday

Opening day for the 2012 Wisconsin fishing season is tomorrow and you can bet that there will be lots of folks out there even if the weather doesn’t quite cooperate.   Here at DevilsLakeWisconsin.com we have a depth map available, plus a list and links to information about other nearby boat launch areas (See below).  Remember, Devil’s Lake does not allow gas motors and if you do put a boat in the lake please do your part to protect our lake from aquatic invasive species!

Also remember to carry out your trash. Every year we see a good amount of garbage left in popular fishing spots within the park.  Please respect the park, and the folks who use the spot after you!

Have fun out there this weekend and BE SAFE!

Wild Whooping Crane Chick Hatches in Central Wisconsin

As you might guess, here in Baraboo, the home of the International Crane Foundation, we’re always excited to hear of a success in the Whooping crane breeding program… especially the unexpected ones!

The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) is celebrating another success in its efforts to reintroduce a wild migratory whooping crane population in eastern North America. A whooping crane chick hatched yesterday in Wood County, Wis.

The chick, #W1-12 (W = wild hatched), is the offspring of whooping crane pair #12-02 and #19-04 from the ultralight-led crane Classes of 2002 and 2004.

The pair has laid eggs every year since 2008, but until this year, their eggs have always been infertile.  The pair proved to be good parents in 2010, when their infertile egg was replaced with a captive-produced whooping crane egg, and the pair hatched and raised the chick to fledging. Walking With Dryads

This time of year when the water of Devil’s Lake is still a little cold for a swim, when days are often mixed with clouds and rain, it’s a great time to put on your boots and head out into the wooded trails that criss-cross the park.  Right now the trails are lined with May Apples and Wild Geraniums.  The trees are finally loosing that yellow tinge and are turning a shade of rich summer green. The rains and lingering morning dew only make the kaleidoscope of forest colors all the richer. The  cooler spring temperatures make a hike through the bluffs much more pleasurable than it will be on those summer days when the temps reach into the 80s and 90s. In fact, you don’t even need bug spray yet.  Early May is just a great time to get out on the trails.  (Oh, and keep an eye out for the elves & dryads!)

Badgers win at Devils Lake State Park!

It was a cold morning here at Devil’s Lake State Park yesterday, but that didn’t stop the Wisconsin men’s rowing team from capturing both the Cochrane and Jablonic cups for the seventh-straight year!  I won’t bother to mention that I had to wipe snow and slush off my windshield when I was leaving to photograph the contests! It was great to watch the Badgers win, and to see a rowing race on the lake since way back, well, before my time anyway.  For the full story click here.  To see more pictures from the event check out our Flickr Gallery.  Go Bucky!
