What a difference a week makes! The heavy rains from Tuesday night into Wednesday really cleared the leaves off of the trees at Devil’s Lake State Park! A snow plow would have come in handy on South Shore Road near Hwy 113 yesterday morning just to clear the fallen leaves! Oh, well.. It IS almost November.
Weather & Conditions
It’s wet and cloudy out there right now, but the forecast for the weekend looks nice. As I mentioned, the heavy rain we had yesterday, has done a number on the trees and the fall color season is OVER. (I’ve posted some video of the heavy rains over on our Facebook Page.) Creative photographers will still find enough color to play with, but the glory days of autumn are done.
You can expect some trails to be wet and muddy, especially out on the Steinke Basin Loop & Uplands trail near Hwy 113. Most blacktop trails will be slippery and the leaves can make staircases hard to navigate.
Just an FYI, for hikers concerned about the annual hunting seasons.. Wisconsin’s Deer Gun Season runs from Nov. 19–27.
This weekend will be the last weekend that the North Shore Chateau (Concessions) will be open for the season. So this is your last chance to get one of their sweet “Gone Squatchin’ T-Shirts!
Potential campers will want to know that only the Quartzite Campground & South Shore Group Camp is open. I’ve been told Group Camp is full. Even this time of year, you should always have advance reservations. If you can’t find a campsite, your best bet is Mirror Lake State Park this time of year. Many local private campgrounds are now also closed for the season.
If you’re looking for a Halloween Party for the adults… You might want to check out the Pumphouse Sports Bar & Grill near the park who will be hosting a Halloween bash. Here’s the details on that.
Slipping Toward Winter
This is the beginning of the quiet season here at Devil’s Lake State Park. Right now us nature nerds are watching for the annual gathering of the Turkey Vultures which arrive in the hundreds this time of year, before heading south for the winter. Soon the Sandhill Cranes will getting ready to head out as well. If you want to know more about that, check our Facebook Page regularly. I’ll generally post our wildlife discoveries there. Next up will be Snowshoeing, The First Day Hike and more!
Holiday events in the Baraboo Area are coming fast as well. Downtown Baraboo’s Christmas Light Parade will be on November 19. The community has a variety of annual holiday events and the parade kicks it off. You might want to check out Sauk Prairie’s Holiday Light Parade, Tree Lighting & Fireworks Extravaganza on the 18th as well.
OK, so I think that’s it for the moment… Be sure to bookmark or subscribe to our blog & follow Skillet Creek Media on our various social channels for lots of photos, events and information from Devil’s Lake region. Of course it all comes with an “outdoor” spin.. cuz’ I’m rarely allowed in the house!
