Dirty Fingernails Free To Volunteers!

Dirty Fingernails Free To Volunteers!

I want to talk a bit about volunteer projects for October & November at Devil’s Lake State Park.  You see, there are 2 ways to care for the park you love, one is by writing checks and the other is by getting dirty fingernails. To be honest, the dirty fingernails bit tend to produce more visible, immediate change and make the park more enjoyable for you when you visit.  Heck, you don’t even have to get your hands dirty, but either way, donating your time has instant, gratifying effect.

There are two opportunities coming up quickly here: Trail work & Helping Sue (Park Naturalist) at the Nature Center with school groups.

Parfrey's Glen - Overuse

Closing “volunteer” trail to stop damage at Parfrey’s Glen SNA

Trail Work –  You’ve heard me rat on about trail conditions at the park and nearby natural areas. Well, by working with Devil’s Lake State Park staff we can start changing things right now! We’re working to organize trail clean ups and maintenance with Devil’s Lake & Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area between now and when the snow flies. Our first goal is to continue to close off “volunteer” trails that destroy the environment, but are just looking pretty trashy as well.

Here are the Dates:

Thursday, October 20 – 5:00 pm until dark
Meet at the East Bluff Trail head (north shore)
We’ll be working on blocking off non-official trails. Bring gloves if you feel you need them.

Sunday, October 23 – 1:00 pm until 3:00/4:00 pm
Meet at the Parfrey’s Glen Parking Lot
We’ll be working on blocking off non-official trails. Bring gloves if you feel you need them.

Saturday, November 5 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Meet at the Nature Center
We’ll determine if we need to work on the East or West bluff, again blocking off non-official trails. Bring gloves if you feel you’ll need them.

All tools needed will be provided.
Bring water and a snack or two too.
