Thank you to the Baraboo News Republic for picking up on my earlier blog laying out my concerns about the care and protection of Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area. I have to say, I’ve been feeling a bit like the Lorax shouting out into a windstorm. Recently though, I’ve heard from many residents, visitors and politicians who all express the same general frustration that Pewit’s Nest as well as Parfrey’s Glen and other local natural treasures managed by our state are not getting the care that they need given their popularity and high visitation rates. When it comes to high volume use of Wisconsin’s state parks and natural areas, the Baraboo Hills are ground zero.
This isn’t just an issue of “speaking for the trees”, it’s our about our local and state economy. People come from all over the world to experience our natural wonders. They stay in our hotels & campgrounds. They shop in our stores & eat in our restaurants. If our attractions become less than stellar, the numbers will go down. Can we afford that?
Our goal is simple; Make sure Pewit’s Nest, Parfrey’s Glen, Devil’s Lake State Park and other natural areas are and continue to be worth the trip. I hope more local folks and organizations will join me in asking for real changes. We’ll help, we just need to get the conversation started.
Imagine having some VIP guests coming to visit. Imagine that you want them to invest in your small business.. Wouldn’t you clean up your home and business with time to spare? Well, it’s April and our guests are just about to arrive.
