Balanced Rock is one of the more popular rock formations at Devil’s Lake State Park. I can’t count how many times I’ve been asked over the years if it can be seen without climbing the bluff. Well, the simple answer is yes, if you have good eyes and more easily in the winter. The photo above was taken just this morning from the south shore picnic area. Balanced Rock is actually pretty easy to see from the bottom of the bluff if you know where to look. Just follow that slope up on the left. About halfway up you’ll find a small dark gap. On the right side of that little gap is Balanced Rock. (Look Below) Now you can easily point it out to your friends when they ask. Right?
Or, better yet you can hike right up Balanced Rock trail and see it up close! (You might want to wait until summer!)
