May 17 – May 19 Area Events
Here are the weekend’s area events. It’s that time of year again! Each friday throughout the summer season we post a “last minute” list of events here in the Devil’s Lake Area. We don’t list every event, just the stuff we think might be fun for families visiting the area. As you can see, even this early in the season there is a lot to keep you busy!
Just a quick note about the park this weekend. The lake flies are still out, so be aware of that. Also the lake water temperature is still very cold. If you plan on going out on the water, wear a life jacket. Cold shock and incapacitation happens in no time.
Friday – Heron Rookery Watch – Friday, May 17th 2013 from 6pm to 8pm - Come to group camp parking lot to watch the herons. We’ll have a spotting scope and binoculars to borrow so you can watch the adults as they are sitting on their nests. You can come any time between watch the birds. Meet in the Group Camp Parking Lot on the South Shore.
Saturday – Wild Lunch – Animal Feeding at the Nature Center – Watch the animals in the Nature Center have lunch! Watch the box turtles munch on some salad. See the watersnake slurp down a fish. Look at the tree frogs as the tackle a cricket or two. Meet at the Nature Center.
Saturday – Frog Safari If you are a frog fanatic, you will want to join us for this nocturnal trip to the park’s kettle ponds. We’ll listen for spring peepers, chorus frogs, and gray tree frogs. We’ll also explore what other night sounds we can hear as we hike the Johnson Moraine Trail. Bring your flashlight as we’ll be hiking right around dusk. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking lot.
Friday – May 17th 6pm to 10:30 pm – Friday Night is FULL THROTTLE NIGHT – Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue in Rock Springs – Every Friday night from 6:00 pm – 10:30 Come and enjoy: Live Music, Classic Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Food, 50/50 Raffles, prizes and fun for everyone. Saturday – Art & Bloom Festival at Durward’s Glen – Saturday, May 18th from 9am to 3 pm. – St Rogers Abbey Bakery-the nun’s are back with their French Bakery from the Fraternite Notre Dame. in Chicago, with tons of tasty treats. Local Artists, Authors doing book signings, wagon rides, and more.. Ph: (608) 356-8113
Saturday – Aldo Leopold Family Day – Saturday, May 18th from Noon to 4pm. This is a free, family friendly event to celebrate the coming of spring. The event features hands-on activities for kids and families, including games, nature crafts, nature hikes, and more! Bring the whole family for a great day of fun. Sunday – Grand Re-Opening of Portage’s Historic Indian Agency House. On Sunday, May 19, help us celebrate the unveiling of the newly restored 1832 Winnebago Indian Agency and our 81st year of protecting and sharing Wisconsin’s history.
Enjoy a day of community and culture, featuring traditional performances by singers and dancers of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Ho-Chunk Gaming is generously sponsoring two performances, to be held at 1PM and 3PM. The site opens at 10AM, with concessions, Native American vendors and artisan demonstrations adding to this unique experience. In addition, guided tours of the Historic Indian Agency House by trained docents will be offered several times throughout the day with the normal required fee waived. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets for this open air event. Ph: (608) 742-6362
