Get Out This Weekend! (Feb 1, 2013)
It’s Friday, It’s the first of February and the weekend is just about here. Well, despite the cold and with all of the fresh snow, there’s quite a bit to do here in the Devil’s Lake region this weekend.. So let’s get right to it!
Go Snowshoeing! – Tomorrow (Saturday Feb 2nd) you can try snowshoeing for the first time or just join the group at Devil’s Lake State Park for a short hike around the north shore of Devil’s Lake. “Try Snowshoeing” will start at the Nature Center on the north shore of Devil’s Lake at 1pm and go until around 2:30 pm. There will be snowshoes available for folks who don’t have their own and limited children’s sizes as well. Then later in the evening you can take your new snowshoeing skills over to Mirror Lake State Park for their evening Ski, Snowshoe, Hike event. What’s more, parking lots at Roznos Meadow, and Parfrey’s Glen are both plowed and open for snowshoers who want to go out on their own. As of this morning, the parking area at Pewit’s Nest SNA was not plowed.
Cross Country Skiing - Saturday 6 to 8 pm Join the Friends of Mirror Lake State Park for a torchlight hike/cross-country ski/snowshoe event. Meet at the beach area. There will be a concession stand with hot food and beverages available and you can warm up at the bonfires. A great time! Devil’s Lake State Park also has xc ski trails and the fresh snow should have them in fairly good shape, but they may not be groomed. Mirror Lake usually has the better ski trails.
Watch Bald Eagles - The Bald Eagles are all over in Sauk Prairie. Download this PDF for the best spots to watch!
Party with a Ground Hog – You can join Jimmy the groundhog in Sun Prairie tomorrow and see how long this blasted winter will last! The city’s annual groundhog prognostication is scheduled to take place at sunrise on Feb. 2 in Cannery Square Plaza. Click here for details.
Watch a Movie - Saturday and Sunday night the historic Al. Ringling Theatre is showing the classic western comedy, “Blazing Saddles”. For more info visit www.alringling.com.
Go Snowmobiling - Trails in Sauk County will open at 12 noon on Friday, February 1st. The recent snow varied anywhere from 5″ to 11″ throughout the county. Some trails in Sauk County have been groomed although groomer operators have reported several down trees & bare spots due to high winds. For more information visit www.saukcountysnomobiling.org
Of course, this list will just get you started. Devil’s Head Resort & Cascade Mountain are covered in fresh snow for downhill skiers. I expect there will be a lot of folks out ice fishing on Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake and Lake Wisconsin as well. Whatever you do this weekend, stay warm and be safe out there!
