There are an amazing variety of birds that are returning to the area right now, and even more will be out on Devil’s Lake as soon as it thaws including; Great blue heron, loons, coots, mergansers, buffelheads, sandhill cranes, osprey and many more. The heron arrived at the south shore rookery on St Patrick’s day this year and have begun settling in for the new season. Our turkey vultures were right behind them and are now up in the pines along the north shore entrance road. When you visit the park, be sure to look up and check out the vultures riding the thermals near the cliffs and above the lake! If you’d like to see just some of the creatures we have seen here at the park and here in central Wisconsin check out our Pinterest “Critter’s Board”.
If you’re a birder and looking for arrival times for migrating species, we encourage you to follow our Facebook page where we often let you know what we’re seeing around the area. You can also call the Devil’s Lake State Park Nature Center and speak with the park naturalist!
