Snowshoeing Season at Devil’s Lake!
The recent snowfall has turned Devil’s Lake State Park into a winter wonderland. In fact, Devil’s Lake was right in the middle of the highest snowfall region getting nearly 18 inches of fresh snow! Now is the perfect time to get out and try snowshoeing cross-country skiing and other winter activities at the park!
FIRST DAY HIKE & SNOWSHOE – Kick off the new year with a first day with the annual “First Day” hike and snowshoe next Monday at the Roznos Meadow Parking lot along highway 113 from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Dress warm and bring a flashlight for this twilight hike through the meadow. Bring your snowshoes! Snowshoes will also be available on site to loan as well. GOOGLE MAP TO MEET UP LOCATION
BORROW SNOWSHOES FREE – For the rest of the winter snowshoes will be available to borrow FREE OF CHARGE from the park’s Nature Center located on the north shore. Don’t miss this great opportunity to try this fun and growing winter sport. The Nature Center will be open Thursday & Friday from noon to 4 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Sunday and Monday the NC is closed and Tuesday & Wednesday you’ll need to call ahead or check for the open sign when you visit the park.
CROSS COUNTRY SKI – The cross-country ski trails are now open, but they may or may not be groomed. Often if you are looking for well-groomed trails, it’s best to head on over to Mirror Lake State Park.
SLEDDING – The sad news at the moment is the park’s fantastic sledding hill is closed for the time being as it is located in the Quartzite campground which is currently having construction work done.
ICE FISHING – The lake itself is not frozen over yet, so ice fishing will have to wait!
NEW YEAR’S DAY PADDLE – Portage, Wi., – If you’re truly a brave soul you may want to get your new year started early with a paddle at Lake Columbia in Portage, Wisconsin! Bring your canoe or kayak… (And warm gear!) Join Wisconsin’s Mad City Paddlers for their annual Fog Bowl paddle on the warm waters of Lake Columbia! This is a loosely organized event and people will be paddling throughout the day. Afterward head into Portage to join the group for a warm up at a local restaurant!
