100 mile – Day 4
Weather can change in an instant. While I stood at the boat landing talking with a couple of the parks rangers, the sun was breaking through the clouds regularly. In fact it was a, “nice day for a paddle” as the ranger suggested. It stayed nice for about the first half hour at least. Slowly though, more clouds came in, the wind picked up and it became rather less “nice.”
We’ve been talking about how low the lake is. Have a look at this.
Normally most, if not all of the rock you see here would be under water.
I came across this spider near the diving rock just off of Tumbled rocks trail.
It was about as big as the palm of my hand!
By the time I got to the southern end of the lake the clouds were getting quite thick and the wind began to pick up.
I paddled along South Shore Road as waves splashed against the rocks.
The sun had broken through again as I returned to the north shore. Here a railway worker was moving stones
to control the erosion along the tracks.
Only 88 more miles to go…
What it’s all about: 100 Miles To Winter

I’m planning to visit Devil’s Lake for the first time in a couple of weeks. What do you recommend as the best spot to launch from for a trip around the lake?
Hey Mark! Probably the North Shore Boat Landing. It’s in the main public area on the north-east corner of the lake. IF that’s busy (which I doubt this time of year) then you could go over to Cottage Grove Rd on the south-west corner. There is a small parking area just before the cabins, with a good launch area for kayaks and canoes just kitty-corner. The main south-shore boat landing is a hassle. You have to drive up to the launch, unload, then go park in a different area across the road…
Thanks for the info. My wife and I will be visiting mid week, sometime in the first 2 weeks of Oct. We want to take in the Fall colors and do a little paddling. Bringing our double Easy Rider Tatoosh. Staying 1 or 2 nights. Besides Devil’s Lake, which we do want to paddle around for sure, where would you recommend for another little half day paddle trip?
