The End of the (ski) Trail

The sudden run of warm weather has been great for hikers but it has also been the death knell for the 2009-10 cross country ski season.  The park trails are done.  No ifs, no doubts.  They are toast. Left in their wake are piles of slush, rivulets, puddles and bottomless pits of mud.  If you’re out hiking in the park’s wilds the last few days, you soon realize you are hiking in the lands of the terrifying and mysterious Wisconsin Bootsucker.  Bootsuckers live underground in the soft mud and wait to grab passers by and pull them down into the earth.  Well, that’s what I tell the kids anyway..

BTW the next Devil’s Lake State Park Centennial Planning meeting is wed, St. Patrick’s Day at 2pm and held at the park office.  Don’t forget to wear green.. Oh wait, park staff doesn’t really have an option!
