Twitter Down The Wisconsin

There’s certainly more you can do with a Twitter account than tell people what you had for breakfast! One example is sharing a bit of Wisconsin.  With that in mind, tomorrow morning my paddling partner and I are off down the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway by kayak.  Along the way we will be posting notes, photographs, tips & trivia to our Bluffnotes Twitter account for those of you who would like to follow along.  If you’re not into Twitter but would still like to follow along, just click on over to our BluffNotes page or you can watch the feed right here on the homepage as well. This will be the first time we’ve paddled this stretch of the Wisconsin so it will be a voyage of discovery on our part.  Now, we have to be back home Sunday afternoon so the big question is, how far will we get by lunchtime on Sunday when we have to head home?

Check out this map above.  Each blue marker marks the 10 bridges between our launch point at Ferry bluff and point where the Wisconsin meets the Mississippi.  Here’s what you need to know to make a guess at how long it will take:

  • The total miles will be around 85.
  • The Wisconsin River runs on average of 1-5 mph.
  • I am a paddling instructor
  • My partner has never paddled over 15 miles in a day.
  • Kayakers on average paddle between 3-4 mph.
  • Daylight now is about 12 hours sunrise to sunset.

If you’d like to guess how far you think we’ll get by Sunday afternoon (How many bridges??) just comment right here.  Have you done this trip before?  How far did you get?

Well, with that it’s time to go pack the boats for our early start tomorrow.  There are so many wonderful places to explore here in Wisconsin.  The lower Wisconsin State Riverway is new for us.  We encourage you to get out and explore a spot you’ve never visited before.  Even if it’s right in your own back yard!

It would be nice to know just what you packed into the boats.

    Hi Rick,

We’re actually working on that right now… We are taking 2 sea kayaks. Both are 17 feet with dry hatches so we can take a lot of camping gear. We’ll have to be prepared to be wet a lot as well by the looks of things.

sounds cool! some of us were commenting that on our way up to the Apostles we crossed over the Wisconsin river again and again and again.

Guessing somewhere between bridges 5 & 6 provided you stop and smell some roses!
