Name That Green

Can you name this plant?

You would’nt think it but even our little Baraboo Bluffs are high enough to have snow stick on the very tops and yet everywhere else it’s rain.

Out hiking the last week or so on the Uplands Trail I’ve noticed the early spring plants are starting to push up through the thick leaves covering the forest floor. Even a couple trees are starting to put out their leaves as we march toward May.  Can you name these early spring risers? Call the image above No. 1.

Riverfest – Wisconsin Dells

Join me this Saturday at the Wisconsin Dells Riverfest! The day will include kayak exhibits, a 2k race event, food, boat tours, live music and a kayak clinic presented by your truly. Tree Buds – April on the West Bluff of Devil’s Lake State Park

It’s still early spring but there are signs of life out there if you look.  Tree buds are starting to swell and brighten up.  The first shoots of Dutchman’s Breeches are starting to show up along the edges of the bluff trails and of course even the moss is taking on a brighter happier shade green!

the waiting

uplands trail – march 31th, 2009

So now the waiting begins.  It’s sunny this morning but it’s been almost exclusively rainy and foggy for days.  The mountain bike trails are muddy and closed until they dry out.  That generally means until sometime in May. Which by the way is when boat rentals and concessions usually open up as well. Being that we are dealing with nature here, all dates are well… flexible…
