Well, this morning I posted some pictures from yesterday and captioned them. Go here for those. Disappointing as disaster pictures go, but great news for us. It’s just not all that bad considering what it could have been like. Paul asked about boat landings. . . Well as you can see from the top shot the road to the North Shore landing (which is gated by the way) ends here. I actually filmed a kayak rolling demonstration in the parking lot! The little island that used to be out there is now just a few bits of green sticking a foot out of the water. On South Shore the road to the boat landing is closed from both sides. The landing is also under water other than a bit of pier which makes an interesting island at the moment. So all in all, the lake will have to come down quite a bit before the landings are open again. (one advantage of small boats is we can launch anywhere) Cosmetically there are lots of brown areas where the water has receded, there are some smelly areas, and as I said yesterday some really heavily mosquito infested areas (mostly on south shore). However, the campgrounds looked ok from a quick drive by, the stores are open, the bands are playing (if the weather holds out), and the water is safe to swim in. .

Derrick-thanks for the update on the boat launches. Looks like we’ll be going to Mirror Lake for the fishing. Glad to see things are are getting better. Really looking forward to my trip in mid-July to Devils Lake.

How does the beach area look? Camping up at Devils Lake week of July 13. Will there be sand for the kids? How about the mosquitoes?

Hey trish, I’ve posted that info in newer posts. But the main answer is that there are no sandy beaches. South shore is a bit heavy on mosquito right now due to the high water, so take your spray.

Great update! From your photos I’m assuming it is ok for us to take our canoe on Devils Lake this weekend (July 4-6). Are you aware of any canoe / fishing restrictions on the lake?

Thanks! Sure you can take your canoe out on the lake. I’ve been out there in my boats regularly. Just be a bit more alert for things sticking up here and there in areas that are normally not under water.

Are they doing anything to bring the water level down, like pumping? I’d hate for the park to go back to having no sandy beach for the children to play with.

Is there actually clean up being done, or is the park still stuck on “natural?” I stopped going after the last flood because there was no sand, the bugs were insane, and there were smelly piles of seaweed etc… everywhere. It didn’t seem that park officials were trying to clean up and make it enjoyable again.
