Last Week

Here we are. It’s June 24th, and appart from the realization that I’ll be turning 43 in a few days I’m also waiting just like you to find out if the park will open this week.  Now to be sure, the area is drying out.  Most roads are again open and other than some brown grass here and there things look almost back to normal in much of the region.  We’ve watched as DNR trucks with busses of volunteers headed out to trouble spots over the last week and can only guess if they will have dealt with enough issues to open the park again.  The announcement should come today or tomarrow.

That is great news! I’ve been waiting to make a day trip up there ever since it closed. Glad things are drying up for everyone.

I see other folks worrying about July 4 camping — we are scheduled to go THIS weekend. We’ve made alternate plans for staying somewhere else, but hope to get to visit DL. It’s a 25-year tradition for us.
Info like status of park being good, great or ok would be most helpful. Can’t get through on phone to a live person. Ugh! My kids are SO bummed.

Linda, I understand the frustration for sure. The park tends to keep things close to the chest sometimes which is just the curse of “officialdom”. I’d have liked to see them share a bit more ongoing information about how the clean up was going.

My best guess given the experience I’ve had is that the park will probably be open soon. This week, or at least before the 4th. BUT I COULD BE WORNG!

That said, I’m sure the lake will be extraordinary high of course. After the last flood there was a lake in the north shore picnic area for the whole of the summer. We named it after one of the office staff then; “Lake Maynard”. I’m sure Lake Maynard has returned.

I would not be surprised if some bike trails & hiking trails will still be closed. Depending on the damage, Parfrey’s Glen may be closed longer than the rest of the park too. It’s hard to tell. Parfrey’s Glen is just a perfect funnel for water and when it floods it does lots of damage inside the gorge.

The campgrounds should come out fine. Even in 93, there was not really all that much damage to the campsites. Just a few were really hurt and those were repaired quickly.

The real issue as mentioned on the official site is the water. It seems to get fouled up pretty easily. Making sure the water is safe and the restrooms work are the important things.

In the end we just have to hang tight. I’m anxious to get out there as well. From my office I can look out at the West Bluff and constantly think about getting back out on the trail. Let alone wanting to get out and buzz around in my kayak. :)

I am gald to hear that things are drying up. I’m in IL and its not on the news that much down here.
I hope that everyone has been safe thru all of this and that everything is starting to get back to normal for everyone up there. I’m hoping that the Park opens soon and we can all enjoy the beauty of the Park.

Just checked the website a little while ago and things are opening up again on Thursday morning! Yeah!!! We have a reservation starting Friday the 27th. Does anyone know which campsites were affected? I’m curious. From the official park conditions site, it appears that all campsites are fixed and up to par, but again, just curious…. I’m looking forward to getting there this weekend! :)

So what are the chances of getting at some of the climbing areas tomorrow? (wednesday) I would like to get to the CCC area ideally. Thanks!

Weather says more storms this weekend - We are suppose to go camping on the 27th too - More flooding?

I’ve also got a reservation for this weekend and I was happy to hear the park is reopening. I am worried about the rain this week/this weekend. It looks like were going to have some rain everyday up until Saturday night. I hope the ground can take the rain, otherwise we could get some flash flooding and that wouldn’t be good for those of us in tents. Can anyone comment on park conditions?? I’m curious how moist the ground at the sites are and how much rain they can take. I’m worried I might have to make other arrangements…

We were supposed to be there this week. Opted to cancel the reservations and are trying out North Wood County Park this week. Looks nice, but won’t be nearly as nostalgic as DL. Hope things return to normal soon.

I’m so glad its opening up for the weekend. I have reservations and thought I may have to cancel. I am worried that the mosqitos might be a little unbearable since there is so much water.

Does anyone know if swimming in the lake is ok now or is there a high E-coli count due to the flooding of the pit toilets.

I have a group site reserved for my swim team this weekend and called the Wisconsin Parks phone number to check on water quality. According to the woman that I spoke to, the water was tested and is safe for swimming. I am so thankful that the busloads of volunteers were able to manage the damage in a timely manner.
